Write the first reviewIlford PQ Universal is an absolute classic in the black-and-white darkroom. The letters ‘PQ’ stand for the active ingredients Phenidone and Hydroquinone. In the past, photographers mainly used Metol-based developers, but Ilford discovered that Phenidone is more efficient. The result? A powerful formula that oxidises less quickly, remains effective for a very long time in an open developing tray, and is less likely to cause skin irritation.
Although the name ‘Universal’ suggests that you can also use it in a tray to develop special technical films or sheet films, it is first and foremost a fantastic paper developer. It produces beautifully deep blacks and powerful contrast.
What makes PQ Universal truly interesting is the subtle, slightly warm image tone. Exactly how warm that tone turns out depends heavily on the photographic paper you choose:If you use standard paper (such as Ilford Multigrade RC), this developer provides a beautiful, neutral base without that harsh, bluish, cold look.
If you combine it with specific warm-tone paper (such as Ilford Multigrade FB Warmtone)? Then they complement each other perfectly, and the creamy whites and soft, brown-black tones really come into their own.A handy tip for in practice: the standard mixing ratio is 1+9 (for example, 50 ml of developer mixed with 450 ml of water to make half a litre).
Do you want to emphasise the warm tone of your paper even further? Then try diluting the solution to 1+14 and let the paper develop for a little longer.
